SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. John Knotwell, R-Herriman, is resigning from the Utah House of Representatives at the end of the month, Utah House leaders announced Wednesday.

Knotwell in a statement indicated he is resigning to allow more time for his employment.

“A citizen legislature comes with its challenges for many of its members — one of them being a necessary commitment to full-time employment,” said Knotwell. “I love my time representing the constituents of House District 52, my employment requires significant traveling and schedule that will not permit time to serve in this capacity.”

Knotwell until recently worked as the CEO of Utah Technology Council, but in April he began his job as senior vice president of worldwide sales at Nuvi, a social media marketing company, according to his LinkedIn page.

House Speaker Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville, issued a statement expressing gratitude to Knotwell “for his years of service and leadership.”

“Since his election in 2012, John has been an important part of this institution,” Wilson said. “Despite his absence, his presence and leadership will be felt for years to come. We wish him and his family the very best as they move forward to this new chapter of their lives.”

Knotwell was elected to serve as the House’s minority assistant whip during the 2018 general session. In that capacity, he assisted other members of the House GOP leadership craft the state budget, negotiate with the Utah Senate and governor’s office, and secure votes within the House.

Knotwell has represented District 52 — which includes Herriman, western Riverton and southwest South Jordan — since he took office in January of 2013. He has served on committees including House Business and Labor, House Government Operations, House Rules, Government Operations Interim, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Interim, House Rules Interim and the Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee.

The Salt Lake County Republican Party will establish a process for choosing Knotwell’s replacement.

Editor's Note: An earlier version stated Rep. John Knotwell served as the House’s minority assistant whip. Knotwell, a Republican, was the majority assistant whip.
