SALT LAKE CITY — Utahns are evenly split on whether Congress should pursue impeachment of President Donald Trump, according to a new UtahPolicy.com poll.
Y2 Analytics found that 48% of residents say Congress should not hold impeachment hearings against Trump and that he should finish his first term as president.
The poll show 19% want lawmakers to continue investigating to see if there’s enough evidence to hold impeachment hearings in the future and 29% say there’s enough evidence for impeachment proceedings now.
The survey of 1,014 registered Utah voters July 31 to Aug. 6 comes as calls for impeachment have intensified among House Democrats since special counsel Robert Mueller testified before two congressional committees last month. The poll has a 3.1% plus or minus margin of error.
“The overall message seems to be that the president is a polarizing figure,” pollster Kelly Patterson told UtahPolicy.com
“Part of the reason why people do not want impeachment is due to their attachment to the president and the party, which are strong ties,” he said. “A large proportion of people seem to have concluded that the scandals surrounding this president warrant some sort of political action.”
On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski for details about his knowledge of potential obstruction of justice by the president as part of its ongoing investigation.
Not surprisingly, the poll showed a sharp divide between Republicans and Democrats in the state.
Among those who identified themselves as strong Republicans, 90% say Congress should not hold impeachment hearings and Trump should finish his term, according to the poll. The survey found that 72% who identified as independents who lean Republican were of like mind.
The poll showed that 65% of strong Democrats and 62% of independents who lean Democrat believe there is enough evidence for Congress to hold impeachment hearings.
Voters in Utah’s four heavily Republican congressional districts voters mirrored the overall survey results, though in the 3rd District more than half say there should be no impeachment hearing and Trump should complete his term.
