NEW YORK CITY (AP) — Donald Trump didn't win the presidential election, Democrats lost by not paying enough attention to a fearful middle class, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told an audience at a New York City fundraiser.

In remarks Tuesday night about the long presidential campaign and the mood of the nation, the Democratic governor said the race gave voice to a "frightening" amount of fear, anger and hate.

"There is a lesson in what happened in the election, and I believe when you get knocked on your tuchus, you should at least learn the lesson of what happened," he said. "... I don't believe that Trump won. I believe that we lost that election."

He said New York state now must stand up against a "tide of negativity" and confront discrimination and intolerance.

"If you want to make America strong again then remember what made America strong in the first place," he said. "It's tolerance. It's brotherhood. It's acceptance. It's community. That is the way forward."

Cuomo has been mentioned as a possible White House contender in 2020 but has said he is focused on winning a third term in 2018.

Tuesday's fundraiser was held on Cuomo's 59th birthday.
