WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican committee tasked with electing senators raised more than $6.3 million in March and is sitting on almost $16 million.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee on Tuesday said it raised almost $16.5 million during the first three months of this election year. The committee is not carrying any debt.

March's fundraising total was the NRSC's best month so far this cycle.

The group's Democratic rival has not yet released its totals but is expected to do so soon. Ahead of that, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chief Guy Cecil sent a tongue-in-cheek message on Twitter: "Congrats to the NRSC for the 2nd biggest fundraising haul of any Senate campaign committee in March."

The DSCC often outraises the NRSC, but went into March with $1.2 million in debt.
