This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Utah-based Staker Parson Companies recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. This multiple-generation legacy construction materials and services supplier is now headed by Scott Parson, grandson of the company's founder, Jack B. Parson.

With his dynamic personality, Jack B. Parson worked with a general contractor, learned to use every piece of equipment and later opened his own business Jack B. Parson Companies in Smithfield. This is how visionary Jack was — he purchased property that would develop into the sand and gravel mining opportunity that his company, now called Staker Parson, still has today. Scott Parson is now president and CEO, following in his grandpa's legacy.

At the heart of their business, Scott says they mine sand, gravel and rock products and use those materials to produce ready-mix concrete and asphalt to develop building sites for customers. The company now has 1800 employees in their operations in Utah and Idaho. They have the widest offering of products across the broadest geography of any business that does what they do. This translates into convenience for customers.

Scott says what differentiates Staker Parson Companies all comes down to their employee mix. The company has a legacy of top-notch professionals with deep construction backgrounds. Construction is something that gets into a person's blood so it's exciting to be part of building something for the future.

Staker Parson has been so successful that they've built a second operation specifically to handle landscaping requests. They sell colored rock, mulch, bark and topsoil, and can even advise on water wise designs. The Parson family is a great example why the Harvard Business Review ranked Utah as one of the most entrepreneurial-minded states in the nation. One thing Scott loves about Staker Parson and being in the construction business is that every day they're helping someone achieve their dream, from building homes to projects like Legacy Parkway, City Creek Center and the State Capitol and Capitol Theatre renovations.
