When Clyde Cummings joined a cooking class in high school in the early 1900s, all he wanted to do was meet a pretty girl. Things didn't happen quite as planned. He didn't get the girl, but he did discover a brand new passion: candy making .... This was the humble beginning of one of Salt Lake City's most established chocolate shops, Cummings Studio Chocolates, located on the corner of 700 East and 9th South in Salt Lake City.
Company president Marion Cummings, Clyde's daughter-in-law, says Cummings is famous for their Rum Victoria, with the handmade signature on top, but everybody has their favorites. People also come for the truffles, and why not when they have 60 flavors to choose from?
What people really love at Cummings Studio Chocolates are the custom box mixes they make. Marion says they have over 1,000 cards on file from people for what they want in their special assortment. Now it's all computerized, but the cards are still there, as a reminder. That means you could get your grandpa's assortment as a gift for your grandma.
In almost 90 years, Cummings Studio Chocolates has created a lot of memories for people all over Utah. It's a favorite location for special occasions, from Christmas to Valentine's Day to Easter, for that special gift. Not to mention, Cummings also offers shipping on their products. Because these are handmade and not created in a factory by a machine, the chocolates tend to stand out in people's minds and become memories that always bring a smile to someone's face...
With two granddaughters in the business, Marion says Cummings Studio Chocolates is now moving into the third generation .... Family-owned businesses make up the backbone of the American economy, accounting for 50 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product and creating 78 percent of the new jobs. Marion's granddaughters have both been working at Cummings from the time they were little, so they know how to make candy. And best of all, they're learning the business directly from their grandma.
