KSL Coaches Poll: 5A title rematch headlines list of top games

SALT LAKE CITY — Lone Peak begins its title defense Wednesday night in a rematch of the 2012 5A state championship game.

Top five games to watch
No. 2 Brighton at No. 1 Lone Peak Wednesday 7pm
Lone Peak crushed Brighton 68-38 in last year's 5A state championship game. The Bengals would love to get revenge Wednesday night but a win may be even more difficult this time around against the 6th ranked team in the country. No. 4 Alta at No. 3 Davis Tuesday 7pm
Davis opened the season with a big road win at Riverton. Alta hopes to do the same against the Darts.No. 3 Mountain Crest at Weber Friday 7pm
Weber opened their season with an impressive road win at Sky View. Now Hayden Schenck and the Warriors hope to take down another cache valley power.No. 3 Morgan vs. No. 2 Desert Hills Friday 4pm (Sevier Valley Center in Richfield)
These two 3A contenders will do battle at the 2A/3A preseason preview in Richfield.No. 2 Bountiful at American Fork Friday 7pm
The Braves hope to challenge defending champion Orem for the 4A title. They will learn a lot about there chances when they face a young but talented Cavemen team on the road.

The Knights will host the Brighton Bengals in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup. Those two teams top the 5A KSL Coaches Poll once again this week. The Bengals opened the season with a 121-64 win over West. Davis moves up to No. 3 after a big road win at Riverton. The Darts now prepare for another tough test against Alta. The Hawks jump up into the rankings at No. 4. Riverton drops from No. 3 to No. 5 after their loss to Davis.

Defending 4A champion Orem won't open their season until December 6th when they host the Great Western shootout, an invitational that will welcome some of the top teams in Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada. They are No. 1 followed by Bountiful. The Braves opened their season with a 67-66 road win over 5A Northridge. Mountain Crest moved into the poll at No. 3 thanks to a 54-37 win over Wasatch. They face a tough test this week at Weber. Provo remains No. 4 in the poll followed by Timpview at No. 5.

Judge opened the season with an impressive 76-66 win over Bingham to solidify their spot at No. 1 in 3A. Desert Hills remains No. 2 in the poll while Morgan moves up to No. 3. The Thunder and Trojans will face each other on Friday in the 2A/3A preseason preview in Richfield. Dixie is No. 4 in the 3A poll followed by Bear River who knocked off Juan Diego on the road 44-43.

South Sevier is still No. 1 in 2A. Rams guard Race Parsons had another big scoring night with 38 points against defending 1A champ Layton Christian. Wasatch Academy is No. 2 in the poll followed by Richfield, South Summit and Gunnison. Richfield knocked off previously ranked Manti 68-63.

Layton Christian remains No. 1 in 1A despite opening the season with a loss to South Sevier. They are followed in the top five by Panguitch, Bryce Valley, Duchesne and Monticello.

Top five performances of the week

Hayden Schenck Weber
Schenck looks to be 100 percent after ACL surgery in the offseason. He scored 34 points, dished out 7 assists and had 6 steals in a 60-53 win over Sky View.

Race Parsons South Sevier
38 points in the Rams 92-66 victory over defending 1A champ Layton Christian

Joe Giacchetti West Ridge Academy
He scored more than half his teams points with 38 in the Mustangs' 64-42 win over Dugway.

Shad Watson Box Elder
The quarterback of the football team is an even better basketball player. He scored 31 points for the Bees Tuesday but they fell short 64-52 against Copper Hills.

Erin Reichle Weber (Girls)
Reichle finished with 26 points, eight steals, seven assists and six rebounds to help Weber cruise past Hunter.
