SALT LAKE CITY — It’s extension season for the Utah Jazz.
A couple of days after inking head coach Quin Snyder to a longterm contract, the Jazz have now ensured one of their most popular players will be on the roster for at least a season longer.
The Utah Jazz announced Monday that they have signed a contract extension with Joe Ingles. ESPN reported that it was a one-year, $14 million extension for the wing forward who had two years left on his former deal.
“As one of our longest-tenured players, Joe's shooting acumen, playmaking ability and unselfishness have been integral to our team’s identity,” Jazz general manager Justin Zanik said. “We are excited to keep a player like Joe, as his character and leadership are critical for the foundation of our team.”
Ingles, 32, is entering his sixth NBA season, owning career averages of 8.0 points on 44.7 percent shooting from the field and 40.8 percent from 3, 3.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. He has played in 304 straight games dating back to the 2015-16 season, which is the current longest streak in the NBA.
He’s currently third all-time in Jazz 3-point field goals made with 669, setting a franchise single-season record in 2017-18 with 204 threes.
Ingles seems poised to be the team’s sixth man this season and could be serving as the quasi-point guard for the Jazz’s second unit. His ability to run the pick-and-roll, combined with a reliable floater and one of the league’s best ball fakes, has made him one of the better playmaking forwards in the game — something the Jazz have taken full advantage of. He averaged 5.7 assists last season.
With the extension, the Jazz have taken another step of solidifying their core for years to come. What’s next? Next summer, both Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell can sign extensions. Gobert will be eligible to sign a supermax deal and the club can sign Donovan Mitchell to a rookie deal extension.
