FROM DOWNTOWN — This is the final week of the 2019 calendar without any sort of American football games.

So let’s pay homage to “the other football,” from the international pitch to the women’s domestic league, as well as another growing sport in America — the ancient athletic event known as lacrosse.

The Tottenham Hotspurs striker scored a ridiculous goal to beat Juventus, 3-2 in the final minute of a friendly against the Italian champs in a preseason friendly in Singapore.

The England international unleashed a rocket from midfield in the final moments of Saturday’s match, one that could be described as the best of his career — if only it happened in a more “meaningful” contest, right?

“Hopefully I can do it in a big game that matters. Obviously these friendly games are for fitness and to get some energy. It’s nice to win … but. It would be nice if I could do that in the Premier League or the Champions League.”

The goal also drew comparisons to D.C. United star Wayne Rooney’s midfield wonder-strike to beat Orlando City earlier this year. Of course, that goal was described by English pundits as the result of a “retirement league” of MLS.

We all know 26-year-old superstar Bryce Harper can hit — 200 career home runs, 583 RBI, and a .508 slugging percentage prove it. But did you know he can throw, too?

High five for Carson

If you ever feel like sports don’t matter, allow us to introduce you to Carson Pickett.

The 25-year-old defender has found an indispensable place on the back line with the Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League — but her place in America is even more secure.

Despite being born without a left hand and forearm, Pickett hasn’t let that stop her from fulfilling her dreams. A former Florida State standout, she’s now a professional soccer player and an advocate for those with missing limbs, either by ailment or amputee.

Which is why the champion of life went viral this weekend via a photo by Florida soccer coach Becky Burleigh, which showed her special version of a high-five to a lucky fan.

That fan was like Pickett, born without a left arm; and when she sees such fans during Pride matches, Pickett makes a point to shout them out.

“I have the ability to impact a lot of people,” she said recently in a profile by The Guardian. “My parents tell me all the time to use the platform God gave me. I can use my arm for something greater than myself. I’m able to impact so many kids and people who may not see a way out. It doesn’t have to impact them through soccer. To see that I am succeeding in life and happy in life can go a long way for some people.”

Making 'Air Gait' proud

Back in 1988, Syracuse lacrosse star Gary Gait unveiled the ‘Air Gait,’ his soon-to-be iconic play of scoring a goal by leaping over the net and “dunking” the ball.

More than 30 years later, Air Gait is still going strong.

Matt Rambo was the latest offender, using the made-for-NBC Sports event of the Premier Lacrosse League All-Star Game to slam home a score of his own.

Rambo, a Maryland product who plays for Whipsnakes in the PLL, pulled off the feat in front of Gait himself, who now coaches the women’s lacrosse team at Syracuse.
