AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas starting quarterback Jerrod Heard was knocked out of the Longhorns' game against Texas Tech in the second quarter Thursday night with a head injury and will not return.

Heard, a redshirt freshman, appeared shaken up on a sack. How he was injured was unclear as the tackler appeared to get him around the legs and midsection. It was the second time he had been sacked.

Heard also took a big hit in the first quarter when he was drilled by Red Raiders defensive back Nigel Bethel as he ran out of bounds. Bethel was flagged for a personal foul. Heard stayed in the game after the hit.

Heard was 2 of 5 for 12 yards with minus-1 yards rushing on four carries when he left.
