ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- The Best Friends Animal Society, which operates a no-kill animal sanctuary in Kanab, has a dozen people in New Orleans assisting with animal rescues.

Another three were to leave Thursday, said Michael Mountain, society president.

"Sometimes we are rescuing about 40 or so animals a day," Mountain said.

He said every day is different for the animal rescuers.

On Tuesday they went around New Orleans with the U.S. Airborne 3rd Battalion as it conducted sweeps around the city.

The soldiers were picking up people and those from Best Friends were getting the pets, he said.

With permission, the group broke into a pet store to rescue a variety of animals including parrots, iguanas and snakes that were left behind, he said.

"People ask why we are focusing just on animals, but in our terms it is so important," Mountain said. "People lost their homes and literally are leaving Fido, as it were, standing on the sidewalk as they are getting on the bus."

Animals are going to the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Tylertown, Miss., where they will be housed until they can be adopted out. Mountain said all animals have a three-month fostering period in hopes that they can be reunited with their original families.
