PROVO — The BYU Cougars announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to a deal to participate in the inaugural Miami Beach Bowl at Marlins Park in Miami in December.

The Miami Beach Bowl is owned and operated by the American Athletic Conference. The Cougars will face an opponent from the AAC in the bowl, which will be played the week prior to Christmas.

“We are delighted to have Brigham Young University on board for the inaugural Miami Beach Bowl,” said Miami Beach Bowl executive director Carlos Padilla. “BYU is one of the most-respected programs, with one of the most passionate fan bases in the nation. With BYU and an American Athletic Conference team in our first game, we expect to have great interest and support from the Miami and Miami Beach communities and will deliver an exciting game for college football fans everywhere.”

In the official press release, BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe expressed his enthusiasm to be a part of this new bowl game.

“We are excited our football program has the opportunity to participate in the inaugural Miami Beach Bowl against a team from the AAC. Marlins Park is a fantastic facility and we look forward to being in Miami in December.”

While it has been awhile, the Cougars are no strangers to bowl games in the state of Florida. BYU played in the 1976 Tangerine Bowl and the 1985 Citrus Bowl. The Cougars lost both games. In fact, BYU is 0-5 all-time in the Sunshine State.

The Cougars currently do not have a bowl game scheduled for 2015, but BYU has already agreed to play in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego against a Mountain West Conference team in 2016 and 2018.
