IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Luka Garza scored 33 points and four Iowa players scored in double figures as the Hawkeyes beat No. 19 Michigan 90-83. CJ Fredrick had 21 points, Joe Wieskamp 20, and Ryan Kriener came off the bench to score 14 for the Hawkeyes. Eli Brooks broke out of a shooting slump to lead Michigan with 25 points.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Cassius Winston had six points and four assists to give him the Big Ten record for career assists as No. 15 Michigan State beat Wisconsin 67-55. The Spartans stayed in sole possession of first place in the Big Ten and bounced back from a 71-42 loss at Purdue. The Badgers trailed the entire game, but went on a 13-0 run with Nate Reuvers scoring 11 points to cut their deficit to six points early in the second half. Winston has 817 career assists, breaking the conference record set by former Spartan Mateen Cleaves in 2000.
UNDATED (AP) — Rutgers hosts Minnesota in one of the top games in the Big Ten this weekend. The Scarlet Knights have won seven of their last eight games, are off to their best start since 1982-83 and sit one game behind first-place Michigan State. Rutgers is 12-0 at home entering the game against Minnesota (10-7, 4-3). The 6-foot-11, 250-pound Myles Johnson figures to get tested by the Gophers' 6-10, 240 Daniel Oturu. Oturu has seven games with 20 points and 10 rebounds, most in the country. Minnesota comes in 0-5 on the road.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska has hired Matt Lubick to replace Troy Walters as offensive coordinator. The addition of Lubick was announced Friday, hours after coach Scott Frost announced Walters was leaving the program by mutual agreement. Lubick worked as an Oregon assistant with Frost from 2013-16, and he was Washington's co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach in 2017-18. Lubick left coaching a year ago to pursue a business opportunity. Walters had worked with Frost for four years, the last two at Nebraska and the previous two at Central Florida.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois defensive passing game coordinator and safeties coach Gill Byrd is leaving the program because of an unspecified illness in his family. Byrd worked with head coach Lovie Smith for three NFL teams. He coached at Illinois for two seasons. Illinois is coming off a 6-7 season that included a four-game winning streak and an upset of then-No. 6 Wisconsin. The Illini open the season Sept. 4 against Illinois State.
