Weather interrupts Game 3 ALCS

NEW YORK (AP) _ The rubber match is under way in ALCS where the Yankees and Astros are tied at a game apiece.

The Astros held a 2-nothing lead at the top of the 5th when the game was delayed because of weather conditions.

The forecast for Game 4 is also iffy with wet and cool conditions predicted.

Nationals will try to complete a sweep

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Patrick Corbin can pitch the Nationals to their first pennant when Washington goes for a four-game sweep of slumping St. Louis in the NL Championship Series. The $140 million lefty starts at home against Cardinals rookie Dakota Hudson.

Washington hasn't put a baseball team in the World Series since 1933, when the Senators lost to the New York Giants in five games. The nation's capital owns one MLB championship; the Senators won all the way back in 1924. There wasn't even a baseball team at all in Washington for more than three decades until the Montreal Expos franchise moved to town before the 2005 season and was renamed the Nationals. Until this season, the Nats hadn't won a playoff series, going 0-4 since 2012.

Cardinals’ bats need to come alive

WASHINGTON (AP) _ If the Cardinals want to prevent a four-game sweep and get back into the NL Championship Series, their bats need to wake up fast.

St. Louis has all of two runs and 11 hits through three games and trails 3-0. Washington's three starters — Aníbal Sánchez, Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg — have a combined ERA of 0.00. Strasburg took his turn quieting the Cardinals on Monday night, going seven innings in an 8-1 victory. He finished off each of his 12 strikeouts with an off-speed pitch.

Hurricanes begin road trip in L.A.

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Coming off of their first loss of the season, to the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Carolina Hurricanes begin a four-game road trip tonight against the Kings in Los Angeles.

The matchup is among seven games on tonight’s NHL schedule. After winning for the first time this season on Monday, the Minnesota Wild skates at Toronto. Tampa Bay is at Montreal. Winnipeg hosts Arizona. The Flyers are in Calgary, while the Detroit Red Wings visit Vancouver. And Vegas hosts Nashville.

NHL-BLUES WHITE HOUSE

Cup champion Blues visit Trump at White House as full team

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump honored the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, using the occasion to touch on the situation in Turkey and an agriculture deal with China.

Every returning member of the title-winning team went to the White House several months after a couple of 2018 Cup champion Washington Capitals players opted not to visit Trump. Alternate captain Alex Steen says the Blues do everything as a team on and off the ice and cited that as one reason they captured the first championship in franchise history.

The Blues have a heavy concentration of Canadian players and just one American still on the roster. They followed the lead of recent champions Washington and Pittsburgh that went to the White House rather than declining or not receiving an invitation from Trump like in the NBA.

Bears put Hicks on injured reserve

UNDATED (AP) _ The Chicago Bears have put Pro Bowl defensive tackle Akiem Hicks on injured reserve, the latest blow on the injury front for a team trying to keep up in the NFC North. Hicks suffered an elbow injury Oct. 6 against the Oakland Raiders. Coach Matt Nagy had suggested Hicks might return this season and putting him on IR allows the Bears to bring him back in eight weeks.

In other injury news:

_The NFL says the number of concussions in exhibition games this year rose to 49 from 34 in 2018, an increase of 44 percent and a setback in efforts to reduce brain trauma. Concussions in preseason practices fell to 30 from 45 in 2018, perhaps a reflection of the NFL's decision this year to eliminate drills that involve especially violent one-on-one contact. The total of 79 preseason concussions in practice and games was the same a year ago.

— Dallas Cowboys defensive end Tyrone Crawford is set to undergo season-ending hip surgery for an injury that bothered him through the offseason. Crawford, who will go to injured reserve, tried to play through the issue early this season. The eighth-year pro was active for the first two games and had his only sack in Week 2 at Washington.

— Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Stephon Tuitt's season is over. The Steelers placed Tuitt on injured reserve Tuesday, two days after Tuitt tore a pectoral muscle in the first quarter of a 24-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The six-year veteran was in the midst of his best season, racking up 3½ sacks and six tackles for loss in just over five games.

— Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is limited in practice after injuring his left hip against Seattle. Mayfield was hurt on a run in the second quarter. He left the field briefly for treatment and tests but didn't miss a play in Cleveland's 32-28 loss Sunday.

HONG KONG PROTESTS-JAMES

LeBron James no longer King James for Hong Kong protesters

HONG KONG (AP) — LeBron James' standing among basketball fans in Hong Kong took a hit because of comments the NBA star made about free speech. Fans gathered on courts amid Hong Kong's high-rise buildings Tuesday to vent their anger.

When a ball smashed into a photo of James' face stuck above the hoop and dropped into the basket, the Hong Kong protesters cheered. They also trampled on jerseys bearing his name and gathered in a semicircle to watch one burn.

The player for the Los Angeles Lakers touched a nerve among protesters for suggesting that free speech can have negative consequences. They have been protesting for months in defense of the same freedom that James said can carry "a lot of negative."

The protesters chanted support for Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, something of a hero among demonstrators in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory for having tweeted on Oct. 4 in support of their struggle, infuriating authorities in China.
