UNDATED (AP) — While Manny Machado agreed to a pending $300 million, 10-year contract with San Diego and Bryce Harper is likely to top Giancarlo Stanton's record $325 million, 13-year deal, many less-than-superstar veterans have been routed on the free-agent market. Of the 111 announced agreements among the 164 free-agents, 36 were for minor league contracts and 26 were one-year deals for less than last year's average salary.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Capitals have placed winger Devante Smith-Pelly on waivers ahead of next week's NHL trade deadline. The 26-year-old Smith-Pelly scored seven goals in last year's playoffs as the Capitals won the Stanley Cup. He hasn't scored a goal in 33 games this season and has just eight points in 54 games. The San Jose Sharks claimed forward Micheal Haley off waivers and Philadelphia put Mike McKenna on waivers to clear a glut of goaltenders.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers All-Star center Joel Embiid will miss at least a week with a sore left knee. Embiid underwent an MRI, which revealed no structural damage, and will undergo physical therapy until he is evaluated again next week.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Top-ranked Duke renews its rivalry against number-eight North Carolina tonight at home. Since losing to Syracuse last month, Duke has reeled off nine straight wins, including a 23-point comeback victory over Louisville. The Tar Heels had a seven-game win streak ended by Virginia last week, but bounced back with a rout over Wake Forest.

CHARLOTTE (AP) — Panthers running backs coach Jim Skipper has retired from coaching after 32 years in the NFL, including 15 with Carolina. Carolina ranked in the top 10 in rushing yards eight times in Skipper's 15 seasons, including each of the last five seasons. Carolina's running backs went to six Pro Bowls under Skipper and four were named All-Pro. Skipper was a member of both of Carolina's Super Bowl teams in 2003 and 2015. A replacement hasn't been named.
