LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Dodgers have agreed to a contract extension with play-by-play announcer Charley Steiner, who will work a reduced schedule in 2019 at his request.
The team said Monday the deal extends through the 2021 season. Steiner, who is 69, is entering his 15th season with the Dodgers.
Steiner says he's trying to keep pace with Father Time, Mother Nature and the road, all of which he points out have "never lost a battle."
The Dodgers have hired Tim Neverett to handle play-by-play for an unspecified number of games on SportsNet LA while TV announcer Joe Davis works national assignments and on AM 570 radio while Steiner is off.
Neverett worked the last three years as the radio play-by-play voice of the Boston Red Sox, who beat the Dodgers in the World Series in October.
Previously, the 52-year-old announcer spent seven years as the radio and TV voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Neverett had other broadcasting jobs in Denver, including with the Rockies, and in Las Vegas, where he called games for the Dodgers' and San Diego Padres' Triple-A teams.
