NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Tropical Storm Cristobal has crashed ashore in Louisiana, and the lopsided storm is also bringing high wind and drenching rains to nearby areas of Mississippi and Alabama. The storm also spun off a tornado in north Florida before its landfall Sunday not far from the mouth of the Mississippi River. Sections of U.S. Highway 90 in Mississippi had to be closed due to flooding. In Alabama, the bridge linking the mainland to Dauphin Island was closed to regular traffic Sunday evening. Dangerous storm surge warnings remained in southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi as the storm moved inland.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney marched Sunday in the nation’s capital in a protest against police mistreatment of minorities, making him the first Republican senator known to do so. Romney, who represents Utah, posted a tweet showing him wearing a mask as he walked with Black Lives Matter protesters in Washington. Above the photo he wrote: Black Lives Matter. Romney has been one of the more independent members of the U.S. Senate’s GOP caucus. He voted to remove President Donald Trump from office after the impeachment trial.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — President Barack Obama says failed police practices, inequality and decades worth of anguish have fueled the nationwide protests following the recent deaths of unarmed black women and men, including George Floyd. He along with his wife, Michelle, delivered speeches during YouTube’s “Dear Class of 2020” virtual ceremony. The duo, along with a star-studded lineup including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Tom Brady, offered inspirational messages in the hopes of uplifting new graduates. The former president told graduates that the coronavirus shined a light on a plethora of America’s ongoing issues. Michelle Obama said the ongoing protests following Floyd’s death are a “direct result of decades of unaddressed prejudice and inequality.”

UNDATED (AP) — Police around the U.S. took a less aggressive stance and even sometimes joined protesters demanding a reckoning with institutional racism as leaders in the city at the center of the latest call for law enforcement reforms pushed to dismantle its police department. Two weeks after George Floyd, a black man, died in Minneapolis after a white officer pressed a knee on his neck for several minutes, a majority of the City Council vowed to dismantle the 800-member agency. On Sunday, nine of the council’s 12 members vowed to end policing as the city currently knows it.

UNDATED (AP) — Retail workers across the country are facing insults, threats and even attacks from customers angry over being told to comply with coronavirus restrictions in stores. One retail store manager has decided to fight back with a Facebook page called “Retail Life During COVID-19." After posting a photo of the bruised and bloody face she suffered after being punched by an angry shopper in Modesto, California, Samantha Clarke quickly accumulated tens of thousands of followers. Some told her their stories of similar harassment. Shoppers also weighed in, often thanking Clarke for bringing to their attention what retail workers are up against.
