UNDATED (AP) — Experts on a special government panel have approved a plan to remove a coronavirus state of emergency from Tokyo and four other remaining prefectures, paving the way for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to declare entirely ending the measure to allow businesses to gradually resume. Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura told reporters that experts on a government-commissioned panel approved the plan to end the state of emergency.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has broadened its travel ban against countries hard-hit by the coronavirus by denying admission to foreigners who have been in Brazil in the two weeks before they sought entry to the U.S. President Donald Trump has now banned travel from China, Europe and the United Kingdom and Ireland. He had said last week that he was considering similar restrictions for Brazil. The restrictions are scheduled to take effect late Thursday. The U.S. leads the world in the number of confirmed cases, followed by Brazil, now Latin America’s hardest-hit country. Third on the list is Russia.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Nearly two weeks ago the White House urged governors to ensure that every nursing home resident and staff member be tested for the coronavirus within 14 days. It’s not going to happen. A review by The Associated Press found that at least half of the states are not going to meet White House’s Monday deadline and many aren’t even bothering to try. Many say the logistics, costs and manpower needs are too great to accomplish the testing goal in a two-week window. Some say they need another week or so, while others say they need much more time.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Thomas Waerner won this year’s Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in March, but he is still waiting to return to his home in Norway. The Anchorage Daily News reported Waerner and his 16 dogs have been stranded in Alaska by travel restrictions and flight cancellations caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The 47-year-old plans to fly home in early June. Waerner has five children and 35 other sled dogs in Torpa, Norway. He missed the 10th birthday of one of his children and misses morning coffee with his wife, who left Alaska in March shortly before health restrictions stopped travel.
WILLINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Police in Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are looking for a 23-year-old man believed to be connected to two Connecticut slayings. Connecticut troopers say Peter Manfredonia is suspected in a deadly assault in Willington on Friday and a homicide in Derby on Sunday morning. He's believed to be armed with several weapons. Police say a stolen car Manfredonia had been driving was found in New Jersey at the Pennsylvania border Sunday afternoon. The Connecticut Post reports that Manfredonia is a 2015 graduate of Newtown High School and a senior at the University of Connecticut majoring in finance and mechanical engineering.
