UNDATED (AP) — Three people are confirmed dead and a dozen more injured as a powerful storm front packing suspected tornadoes smashed into buildings, downed trees and left a trail of destruction around the Deep South. A dangerous mix of thunderstorms and suspected tornadoes raked the region Monday as a cold front collided with warmer air. The severe weather threat was continuing past nightfall. The sheriff's office in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, says the death there came from an apparent tornado strike on a home. An official in north Alabama reported two deaths there after storms passed through that region.

United Nations (AP) — China and Russia are calling on the U.N. Security Council to terminate sanctions on key North Korean exports including coal, iron, iron ore and textiles. They said their aim is to enhance “the livelihood of the civilian population.” A draft council resolution circulated Monday by the two allies of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would also terminate a decision to repatriate all North Korean foreign workers by December 22, 2019.China and Russia made these and other proposals 16 days before Kim’s end-of-December deadline for the United States to come up with new proposals to revive nuclear diplomacy.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A Saudi Arabian student who is facing a federal firearms charge remained in custody Monday while his attorneys sought more documents from prosecutors. They hope to discredit allegations that their client was in possession of a gun and had created a list of people he wanted to kill. The 27-year-old engineering student was arrested Friday, the day before he was scheduled to graduate from the University of New Mexico. Hearings in his case will resume Tuesday afternoon. It will be up to a U.S. magistrate judge to determine whether he should be released pending trial.

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares are rising following a rally on Wall Street that sent the major indexes to record highs, cheered by surprisingly strong economic reports out of China. Benchmarks in Japan, South Korea and China are higher in early Tuesday trading. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq notched all-time highs for the third straight trading day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average bested its last record high set in late November. Among the reports out of China helping drive the rally were growth in factory activity and retail sales in the world's second-largest economy that both beat analysts’ expectations.

UNDATED (AP) — The wealthy owners of OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma started taking far more money out of the company after it was fined in 2007 for misleading marketing of the powerful prescription painkiller. A new court filing shows members of the Sackler family received well over $1 billion in cash and tax payments a year from Purdue from 2008 through 2013 after taking out $1.3 billion total from 1995 through 2007. The distributions declined in recent years. The Sacklers' finances are receiving scrutiny as the company goes through the bankruptcy process to try to settle more than 2,700 lawsuits over the toll of opioids.
