ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A gas explosion in a bakery in southwest Turkey killed one person and injured 36 others on Friday, the country's emergency management agency said.

The explosion occurred on the ground floor of a seven-story building at a commercial center in the city of Denizli, the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate said in a statement. It was caused by a gas canister used for cooking.

Three of the injured were in serious condition, including a pregnant woman, according to the statement.

Gov. Abdulkadir Demir said most of the injured were passers-by or people working in shops close to the bakery.

Video footage of the scene from the private Dogan news agency showed medics helping some of the injured into ambulances, the street strewn with broken glass and debris. One man was sitting on a chair in blood-stained clothes waiting for help.

Denizli is a city of more than half a million residents, 240 kilometers (150 miles) southeast of the port of Izmir.
