JOPPA, Md. (AP) — Hundreds of vehicles joined the funeral procession Friday for a Maryland police officer killed when authorities say a teenager ran over her in a stolen Jeep.
A stream of police vehicles with flashing lights accompanied Amy Caprio's remains from Mountain Christian Church in Joppa to the grave at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium.
News outlets reported officers from across Maryland and several neighboring states attended the 29-year-old officer's funeral, with more than 1,000 people present.
Some spectators stood behind highway medians to watch the procession roll past. More than 600 vehicles took part, including motorcycles, according to a tweet by the Baltimore County police and fire departments.
Caprio died Monday while responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in a Perry Hall neighborhood. Baltimore County police accused Dawnta Harris, 16, of Baltimore, of running over Caprio in a stolen Jeep. He is charged with murder.
Caprio's death was the latest recent tragedy for the county. County Executive Kevin Kamenetz died suddenly two weeks ago. The County Council elected his chief of staff, Don Mohler, to serve the rest of his term.
"Baltimore County is strong. We're sad today, we grieve today. We will get through this," Mohler told WBAL-TV in Baltimore at the funeral.
County Police Chief Terry Sheridan told mourners that he received calls of condolence from the White House and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, The Baltimore Sun reported.
