SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (AP) — A 21-year-old target shooter accused of starting a wildfire that burned near an explosives warehouse south of Salt Lake City last summer has been charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors.
Brian Sampson of Layton was charged Wednesday with causing a catastrophe, obstructing justice, illegal possession of a firearm and misdemeanor drug charges related to the fire that burned more than 200 acres in Saratoga Springs last June.
Charging documents say Sampson was target shooting with a friend when at least one round sparked the blaze near Little Mountain.
Investigators say Sampson claimed he tried to drive to the fire to put it out, but his tire blew out. His friends called 911 to report the fire.
No one was hurt and no structures burned.
It's not clear if Sampson has a lawyer or will be appointed one.
