SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah lawmaker won unanimous committee approval for a proposal to add $5 million to a fund designed to lure movie and television film crews to the state.
Republican state Sen. Jake Anderegg of Lehi told the Deseret News he knows incentives in his bill could pick winners and losers.
But he says it's OK if Los Angeles and Hollywood lose, while Utah gains.
The Senate Economic Development and Workforce Services Standing Committee on Wednesday moved the bill, SB185, to the full Senate.
Lawmakers were told that production companies including Disney Studios and HBO spent $64 million last year and employed more than 2,400 Utah residents.
Anderegg's bill would offer post-performance incentives managed through the current film production program offering a 25 percent payback on money spent in Utah.
