NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Police in Las Vegas chased a driver suspected of shooting a bicyclist over the weekend and it ended with a gunbattle that wounded the suspect and his passenger, authorities said Tuesday.
Gunfire erupted Monday night after Las Vegas police cruisers and a helicopter followed two people in a stolen Honda sedan about 4 miles (6 kilometers) from a residential street in Las Vegas into a suburb, police said.
A man matching the description of the shooter who struck a bicyclist in the leg Sunday got out of the car with a handgun and fired two or three shots at officers, Las Vegas police Capt. Kelly McMahill said.
Police fired back, and the suspect was struck several times. The officers weren't injured.
McMahill said the woman in the Honda was wounded in the wrist, but investigators weren't immediately sure if it was from police gunfire or a shot fired by the suspect.
The man and the woman were taken to a hospital, where both were in stable condition, McMahill said. Neither was immediately identified.
A gun was recovered near the wounded man, and another gun was found in the car, police said.
The officers involved in the shooting were a field training supervisor and a rookie trainee, McMahill said. Both were put on paid leave pending reviews of the shooting by police and prosecutors. Their names were being withheld for 48 hours according to department policy.
It was the 13th officer-involved shooting involving Las Vegas police in 2017.
