DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — A Virginia man is hospitalized in stable condition after police shot him following a standoff.

The Danville Police Department says in a statement a woman called 911 Sunday reporting that her husband, 36-year-old Keith Elson Davis, was armed and threatening to kill himself. Davis wasn't home when police responded.

Officers later returned to the home after the woman reported Davis was at the house and had threatened her. When officers confronted Davis he "brandished a handgun" and climbed onto the roof.

A SWAT team and negotiators responded and tried to persuade him to surrender. Davis climbed through a window back into the house.

After Davis made threatening moves with a gun, a SWAT officer shot him. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

An investigation is ongoing.
