SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say a teenager was arrested in a fatal attack on a 61-year-old worker a southern Utah youth rehabilitation facility.

Officials say the 17-year-old student attacked the Turn-About Ranch staffer Tuesday morning and assaulted a second worker who blocked the suspect from entering a building after another student reported the attack.

The Garfield County Sheriff's Office says the teen got into a worker's car and sped off, but two sheriff's deputies on the way to the facility spotted him driving erratically to Escalate, about 300 miles south of Salt Lake City.

They forced the car to stop with their cruisers and arrested the teen after his car crashed.

The names of the teenager and the slain staffer were not immediately released.

In a statement, leaders of the rehabilitation facility say they are "deeply saddened by the loss of one of our family today."

The statement praises the worker who was killed: "His caring personality and loyal dedication to helping the youth in our program will be greatly missed. His good nature and commitment to our students had a positive impact on those who attended and worked at Turn-About Ranch."
