MILLVILLE, N.J. (AP) — The Latest on the death of a New Jersey state trooper in a head-on car crash (all times local):

3:05 p.m.

A New Jersey state trooper killed in a car crash was responding to an emergency call about an erratic driver when that driver crossed a grassy highway median and slammed into his marked cruiser head-on.

Authorities say rookie Trooper Frankie Williams died in the violent wreck Monday night. The driver of the other car also was killed.

The crash left debris and the mangled cars scattered on Route 55 in Millville.

Police say Elmer resident Lloyd Rudley was traveling south in a Toyota Corolla and crossed into the northbound lanes. They're trying to figure out why.

The trooper was flown to a hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead. He was 31 years old and was recently married. State police say they've "suffered a terrible loss."
