NEW YORK (AP) — A driver on a New York highway who lost control of his car Wednesday and crashed into a barrier, splitting the vehicle in half and triggering other collisions, was killed along with two of his passengers, police said. Ten other people were injured.

Authorities said the driver was traveling fast on the Long Island Expressway in Maspeth, Queens shortly after 4 a.m. when he hit the barrier. The impact sent the front part of his sedan into another section of the road, where it was hit by another car.

Two passengers in the rear seat of the sedan were killed; two other passengers were hospitalized, one in critical condition and the other in stable condition. The driver of the second car refused medical treatment.

A dump truck that police said couldn't stop in time then collided with five cars that had stopped because of the earlier collision. The people injured in that crash were in stable condition, police said.

Killed were driver Michael Fabre, 25, of Oakland Gardens, New York; and his passengers, Giovanny Sanchez, 24, of Brentwood, New York, and Christina Formato, 24, of Franklin Square, New York, authorities said.

The chain-reaction crash followed an Aug. 21 wreck near Manorville, also on the Long Island Expressway, that claimed six lives. Among them was Scott Martella, 29, of Northport, a communications director for Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and a former aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Police said Carmelo Pinales, 26, of Hicksville, apparently lost control of his vehicle, which crossed over a grassy median, went airborne and struck two vehicles.

Pinales and his 27-year-old sister, Patricia Pinales, of Westbury, died at the scene. His 10-year-old son, Cristopher, was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Two others in that vehicle, including Patricia's 3-year-old daughter, were injured. A couple in another vehicle later died of their injuries.
