VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Applications to participate in a program that teaches high school students about contemporary Native American fine arts are due Friday.
The Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute at the University of South Dakota is a series of workshops June 5-17 that focus on Native American culture, history and tradition. The free program is open to 20 students with an interest in visual arts.
All courses are taught by professional artists. Meals, housing, instruction and art supplies are all included.
Students are selected based upon an online application, letter of recommendation and portfolio of their artwork. Special attention is given to applications from Native American students.
The program is sponsored by the USD art department.
