DETROIT (AP) — Junior high students from the Detroit area have taken on bullying in a mock trial before a Michigan Court of Appeals judge.
Students from Cornerstone Charter Schools' Washington-Parks Academy in Redford Township made their case Thursday in Detroit. They have been preparing for the mock trial since last fall, with help from law students from the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School.
The scenario for the trial was of one girl taking another to court for emotional distress and defamation. The Detroit News (http://bit.ly/1FRefNn ) reports the junior high students played the roles of witnesses, lawyers and key players in the bullying incident involving hundreds of text messages.
After the trial ended, Judge Michael Riordan told the students they did an "outstanding job" and that they have "great futures as lawyers."
