HARVEY WEINSTEIN REMAINS IN LOCKUP HOSPITAL
NEW YORK (AP) — He remains in custody — but not quite in prison. Harvey Weinstein is now in his second full day of lockup after he his rape conviction on Monday. Technically, he is in a prison facility at New York’s Bellevue Hospital, being treated for high blood pressure and heart palpitations. His lawyer says it’s like a regular hospital room, but a former corrections official says it’s a jail, all right. Once Weinstein’s symptoms are under control, he gets shipped to Rikers Island — the city’s largest and most notorious jail. He will remain there until he is sentenced next month — they he will be shipped off to prison to serve a term that could be as much as 29 years.

NEW YORK (AP) — For decades, women connected with Hollywood wondered how it could be that Harvey Weinstein could get away with so much — and not be held accountable for it. Now, it’s the disgraced Hollywood producer who’s said to be “flabbergasted” at what’s happening to him. His attorneys say Weinstein can’t believe he was convicted and is now in jail — and may end in prison for the rest of his life. At the same time, his attorneys say he is in “good spirits” and “energized.”

PLACIDO DOMINGO’S APOLOGY
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — It’s said that the words “I’m sorry” are the most difficult to say. So, many people were surprised to see that opera star Placido Domingo has issued a statement saying he is “truly sorry” to the women he is accused of harassing sexually. One of the opera singers who accused Domingo of harassment says hearing the apology was like having “conquered Goliath.” But not everyone agrees with the feelings of soprano Luz de Alba Rubio. Some note the apology came only after the union representing U.S. opera performers issued a damming report confirming accounts that he kissed, groped and pressured women for sex. The report also says that even when lawyers asked him about the numerous accusations, Domingo denied wrongdoing.

FASHION MOGUL PETER NYGARD UNDER INVESTIGATION
NEW YORK (AP) — Federal authorities have raided the Manhattan headquarters of Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard. And the search comes amid claims that he trafficked and sexually assaulted dozens of teenage girls and women. The FBI searched the designer's Times Square offices yesterday — less than two weeks after 10 women filed a lawsuit accusing Nygard of enticing young and impoverished women to his estate in the Bahamas with cash and promises of modeling opportunities. Several plaintiffs in the suit said they were 14 or 15 years old when Nygard gave them alcohol or drugs — then raped them. Through a representative Nygard denies the sex-trafficking claims, calling them “fabricated and manufactured.”
MICHAEL DOUGLAS, CATHERINE ZETA-JONES - ISRAEL
JERUSALEM (AP) — Hollywood power couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are to return to Israel as co-hosts of this year’s Genesis Prize ceremony. The prize foundation says the couple will host the June 18 event. At the annual ceremony, former Soviet dissident and Israeli politician Natan Sharansky is to be honored as the 2020 laureate. Douglas won the $1 million Genesis Prize in 2015.
DISNEY CEO STEPPING DOWN
NEW YORK (AP) — A big shock from the world of Disney. The company says its CEO, Bob Iger (EYE’-gur), is stepping down immediately. Iger was instrumental in steering Disney through its acquisition of the Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel and Fox entertainment franchises. He also was at the helm when Disney launched its video streaming service, which has positioned itself as a strong rival to Netflix. Iger will be replaced by Bob Chapek while Iger stays as executive chair through the end of his contract on Dec. 31, 2021.
