SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (AP) — Nearly a dozen homes in South Jordan could be demolished to make way for a freeway interchange.
The Utah Department of Transportation is rebuilding the Bangerter Highway to improve traffic flow. The agency says nearly 60,000 vehicles travel daily on the highway, and that's expected to double by 2040.
KLS-TV reports the owners of 11 homes were stunned when they learned recently their homes were in the project's preferred path. Other homeowners near 10400 South say they fear property values will fall.
Transportation department spokesman John Gleason says the agency hasn't made a final decision yet. But he says it will work with homeowners.
A 30-day public comment period opens Tuesday.
The transportation department has bought several dozen homes in recent years to make way for the highway project.
