Utah lawmaker running against Romney worth up to $2 million

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Financial disclosure forms show Utah U.S. Senate candidate Mike Kennedy has assets worth up to about $2 million, a healthy balance sheet that's nevertheless far smaller than his Republican competitor Mitt Romney.

A spokesman for the state lawmaker said Wednesday that Kennedy loaned about $250,000 from his retirement accounts to his campaign, which has now forced Romney to compete in a primary election.

The documents that require candidates to report a value range show the family doctor has assets worth between $1.1 million and $2.3 million and makes about $200,000 a year.

Romney, by contrast, earned $5.5 million over the past year, in addition to a fortune worth up to $270 million.

The two men will compete in a June 26 primary in the race to replace long-serving Sen. Orrin Hatch.
