GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — The state says Grand Rapids is getting $1 million to help clean up the site of Michigan State University's future $85.1 million biomedical research center.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality on Monday announced the grant to address brownfield conditions at the former site of The Grand Rapids Press newspaper. It will go toward disposal of contaminated soil as well as building demolition.
Plans call for a roughly 160,000-square-foot, multi-story research building. The building will occupy about half of the property, leaving the door open for future developments. The MSU Grand Rapids Biomedical Research Center is planned to open late 2017.
The DEQ's Brownfield Redevelopment Program provides funding to local governments for environmental response activities at brownfield properties where redevelopment is proposed.
