OGDEN — Authorities say an inmate escaped from the Weber County Jail on Tuesday evening by posing as another inmate.

Kaleb Wiewandt, 40, shaved his head to look like another inmate, according to a news release from the Weber County Sheriff’s Office. He also had the other inmate’s jail ID card and was able to tell jail staffers that inmate’s full name, date of birth and social security number from memory, the release said.

Wiewandt escaped from the jail about 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, the release said. He is from Orange County, California and is possibly headed to that area.

Authorities did not say how Wiewandt was able to get the other inmate's personal information. It's not clear why Wiewandt was able to leave the jail while he was impersonating the other inmate.

He is described as white, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 175 pounds, with blue eyes and a shaved head and face. He was last seen wearing black pants, a grey long-sleeved shirt and a black shirt over the long-sleeved shirt, authorities said. He also had a grey hoodie when he left the jail.

Wiewandt was being held in the jail as part of a U.S. Marshals Service bank fraud and identity theft case.

Anyone who has contact with Wiewandt is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.
