MT. PLEASANT, Sanpete County — Charges were filed Friday against a man who prosecutors say hit a 9-year-old with a stray bullet while target shooting last month.
Camryn Summerhays has been charged with felony discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony, and two counts of reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor, for his alleged role in the Nov. 23 incident.
The 9-year-old was in the back seat of an SUV driving north on U.S. 89, just north of Mt. Pleasant, when he was hit in the shoulder by the bullet, according to Sanpete County officials. The child was in the car with his sister and grandfather at the time.
Sanpete County Attorney Kevin Daniels said Summerhays, along with his wife and 8-year-old son, was target shooting nearby in the direction of the highway with no backstop to stop the bullets. The bullet came from a home roughly 700 to 800 yards away.
The 9-year-old’s injuries were not fatal. He was taken to Utah Valley Hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove the bullet.
“The young man is lucky, his family is lucky, and those that were negligently shooting were lucky,” Daniels said.
Going forward, Daniels said, the family of the boy is asking for justice for what happened.
“They would like to see the individuals involved accept responsibility for what they did and any consequences that may follow,” Daniels said.
