WEST VALLEY CITY — As West Valley police continue to investigate the alleged carjacking and kidnapping of a 16-year-old boy in October, more information about what was found in the stolen car has been released.

On Oct. 10 about 11 p.m., a woman said she was with her 16-year-old nephew and two other juveniles in her mother’s car near 1300 West and 3600 South. The juveniles were allegedly meeting a girl at that address.

But while they were waiting, three to four men wearing masks broke out the front passenger window, pointed a gun at the woman and told her to get out, according to police.

“I got a gun to your head, don’t look at me,” one suspect told the woman, according to several search warrant affidavits filed in 3rd District Court. “If you think this is a big gun, just wait to see the other one I got.”

The two other juveniles were also ordered out of the car and “to put their faces down in the grass,” a warrant states. The masked men, who were calling the 16-year-old by his first name, then got in the car and drove off.

Police tracked down the vehicle about an hour later in Taylorsville, near 5000 South and 1300 West. Detectives watched the vehicle as backup officers positioned themselves in the area. That also included setting up tire spikes in case the suspects fled.

The vehicle did take off, and the car ran over the spikes, according to police.

During that time, while the car was going about 35 miles per hour, the 16-year-old boy was seen rolling out of the car, the warrant states. The boy told police he was thrown out of the vehicle.

The fleeing car crashed a short time later and the occupants got out and ran, but police were not able to locate them.

At the time of the incident, police stated that the carjacking was “absolutely not random” and that the teenager, who suffered minor injuries, was not cooperating with investigators.

On Oct. 14, police went to the boy’s house to try and interview him again, but his mother met officers at the door and told them that her son “refused to speak to him” and “that she would not provide any further information in this case,” the warrant states.

A search warrant was served on the stolen car the same day. Police “found a red mask, 2 sets of gloves, 2 rifles, a handgun, $381 cash, and a dark backpack which contained a large amount of marijuana,” according to the warrant. A fourth firearm was found lying outside the car at the end of the chase.

West Valley police on Tuesday said investigators were still trying to determine who owned the drugs and firearms. As of Tuesday, no arrests had been made.
