WEST VALLEY CITY — A blown transformer that knocked out power to the facility that prints the Deseret News and The Salt Lake Tribune left both publications unable to print and deliver their Sunday editions.

“We regret that the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News, as well as the Sunday New York Times will not be printed tonight,” said Brent Low, president and CEO of Newspaper Agency Company. “Rocky Mountain Power assured us they are working to restore power as quickly as possible, but it could be a lengthy delay.”

Both Salt Lake papers have shared printing facilities via a long-running joint operating agreement. Low said the papers will be printed late and eventually delivered either later Sunday or with Monday’s edition.

Rocky Mountain Power was unable to determine exactly what caused the electrical transformer to fail and was deploying additional work crews to help expedite repairs.

“We’re grateful that both the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune have vibrant digital news operations and readers can access information at their websites,” Low said.

Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune subscribers who have emails on file with the publications’ circulation departments will receive a link, via email, to a digital replica of the Sunday editions.

The Deseret News is Utah’s oldest newspaper, with operations dating back to 1850. Readers can access all of the latest news, all day, everyday, here at deseret.com.
