WEST VALLEY CITY — Authorities responded to a fire in West Valley City overnight when a semitruck carrying potentially dangerous chemicals caught fire.
Unified Fire Authority spokesman Keith Garner said residents around the fire, near 4100 South and 1600 West, were asked to shelter in place around 10:15 p.m. Saturday.
The truck was carrying an “adhesive for acrylics,” or a type of glue, Garner said. It started its chemical process when the internal temperature of the refrigerated truck became too high.
“That allowed it to start mixing together,” Garner said. “It produced some chemicals that were flammable, and cyanide was one of them, but in the amounts that it was producing it didn’t end up posing a threat to anybody. It was just, in the beginning, we wanted to be really precautious.”
The order was lifted around 4 a.m. Sunday.
Garner said the truck has been moved to a storage yard while it finishes its chemical process, which should take about four days.
