UPDATE: Crews rescued two kayakers early Friday who were reported missing near Antelope Island Thursday night, officials said. Three kayakers, all 20-year-old men from Davis County, set out on their kayaks about noon Thursday, according to a statement from Devan Chavez, spokesman for Utah State Parks. About 3 p.m. they headed to Antelope Island due to harsh weather conditions but became separated.
One of the men made it to shore and called for help about 7:30 p.m. He was not injured.
Search crews found the second kayaker in the water on the west side of Antelope Island just after midnight. The third kayaker was also located in the water just south of there about 1:30 a.m.
Both of those kayakers were responsive to rescue crews and transported to Davis Hospital and Medical Center.
SALT LAKE CITY — Crews were searching Thursday night for two missing kayakers who were last heard from about 3 p.m., Davis County sheriff’s officials said.
Three kayakers set out Wednesday with plans to go from Stansbury Island to two other islands and then end their journey at Antelope Island, officials said.
About 3 p.m. Thursday, the three lost sight of each other and at 7 p.m., one kayaker ended up on the northwest corner of Antelope Island and called authorities for help.
That kayaker has since been rescued. The two that are still missing are both 20-year-old men wearing T-shirts and shorts, sheriff’s officials said. None of the three wore life jackets.
Search and rescue crews were searching coves and beachheads in the area. A sheriff’s deputy was also out on a boat with the Department of Natural Resources to search, and another deputy remained on land. Both deputies were ready and able to provide medical care if necessary.
Winds were reaching 20 mph, waves were 7 feet high and temperatures were dropping, sheriff’s officials pointed out late Thursday.
The Department of Public Safety sent out one helicopter to aid the search and then a second so the first could refuel, according to the sheriff’s office.
The rescued man didn’t have injuries, according to Devan Chavez, spokesman for Utah State Parks.
Chavez noted people get separated “a lot quicker than people realize.”
The two missing men could still be on their kayaks, they could have submerged or they could have beached on one of the islands, Chavez said.
He didn’t know if the missing men had cellphones with them and said even if they did, cell service can be spotty in areas, even on Antelope Island.
The names of the kayakers were not released. This story will be updated as further information becomes available.
