FARMINGTON — The Davis School District and Davis County Sheriff’s Office are trying to set minds at ease after a document regarding a possible threat, intended only for law enforcement and school administrators, was widely shared by accident.
The "be on the lookout" document created by the sheriff’s office warned that a former school employee had made threats against the school, often contemplated homicide, and described himself as a sociopath.
The sheriff’s office said in a statement that the document was “released by a public safety partner” and that the office has “identified solutions for preventing this from happening in the future.”
“The sharing of BOLO (be on the lookout) information or documents with other law enforcement agencies and/or public safety partners is a common practice used nationwide in an effort to protect our officers and citizens from possible threats to the community,” the statement says.
Davis School District communications director Christopher Williams said in a statement it is “standard practice … to share sensitive information with administrators.”
"Unfortunately, this information wasn’t kept confidential. It should have been, and we apologize for that,” Williams said. "The information involved a former employee who was dismissed from employment after safety concerns arose. In the process, the district reached out to the law enforcement and they have conducted their own investigation.
"The employee hasn't committed a crime and was not arrested. The district responded the way it did in order to provide a safe environment for its employees and students."
The sheriff's office emphasized that "no crime has been committed" and that the matter has been referred to federal authorities.
“At this time, the public’s assistance in locating the individual or distributing the document/information is not needed.”
