WEST JORDAN — A mother who was in a car crash last month that killed her 16-year-old daughter has died from injuries she suffered during the wreck.
Brandilee Kussee Chacon, 44, was on a camping trip Aug. 17 for her 16-year-old daughter Sierra Rosalina Chacon’s birthday.
The mother and daughter were sleeping in the covered bed of a Ford F250 in a designated parking area off the side of Big Cottonwood Road near Butler Fork Trailhead, near 9300 East, when a Chevrolet Malibu slammed into them.
Four men, who police say had all been drinking, were in the Malibu driving down the canyon when it drove off road after a curve and went airborne, before crashing into the Chacon’s.

But one man told police he didn’t think his friend — the suspected driver — was “that drunk,” according to a search warrant affidavit.Sierra Chacon died on scene and her mother was transported to a hospital in critical condition. She later died of her injuries, Salt Lake City police detective Greg Wilking confirmed Wednesday.
As of Sept. 10, police were seeking DNA evidence to confirm who was driving the night of the crash before screening charges with Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.
Friends and family gathered last Sunday to mourn the loss of Sierra Chacon.
