TOQUERVILLE, Washington County — A woman died after a rollover crash in southern Utah late Sunday evening, authorities said.
The crash took place just before 9 p.m. on state Route 17 about a mile north of Toquerville in Washington County, according to a news release from Utah Highway Patrol.
A 17-year-old girl who had a learner’s permit was driving a small Chevy pickup truck east on state Route 17, the release states. There were four other females in the car, ages 10, 11, 13 and 31, according to the release.
The driver lost control of the vehicle on a swooping turn that leads into town, striking a concrete barrier on the right side of the road, according to the release. The driver corrected to the left, but then overcorrected to the right. The truck hit the right-side barrier again and rolled at least once, according to the release.
The truck came to rest on its wheels, but the 11-year-old and 31-year-old passengers were ejected from the truck, according to the release.
The 31-year-old, later identified as Patricia Holm, of Colorado City, Arizona, was taken in an ambulance to a hospital where she died from her injuries. The 11-year-old is expected to survive and was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.
None of the other passengers had life-threatening injuries, according to the release. They were not identified because they are minors.
Speed appears to have been a factor in the crash, but the cause is still under investigation, according to troopers.
Both directions of state Route 17 were closed for about an hour as crews cleaned up the crash scene, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
