SALT LAKE CITY — Riders experienced “major delays” on all TRAX lines Friday evening due to a train derailment, according to officials from Utah Transit Authority.
The train derailed at 400 South and Main Street about 6 p.m., UTA officials said.
According to Utah Department of Transportation, westbound lanes on 400 South were closed at State Street but have since reopened.
The derailed train didn’t hit any vehicles and no injuries were reported, according to Carl Arky, UTA spokesman. He pointed out there had been construction in that area recently. Officials don’t yet know why the train derailed, but the agency is launching an investigation into the derailment to “get to the bottom of this,” Arky said.
Crews were able to get the train back on the rail but will take it out of service to investigate it, Arky said.
Train service resumed a little after 8 p.m. and Arky said officials apologized for the inconvenient delays that took place during rush hour.
Residual delays were expected throughout the evening and Arky recommended anyone planning on taking TRAX Friday night to check UTA’s social media for updated times.
About 30 minutes after delays were reported, a bus bridge was scheduled to help move passengers between Courthouse, Gallivan Plaza and Library stations, according to UTA.
