OREM — A Heber City man who police say agreed to meet for sex with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl was charged Monday.

Randy Lee Hale, 37, was charged Monday with attempted rape of a child, a first-degree felony, and enticing a minor by internet or text, a second-degree felony, according to court records.

Hale had been "engaged in a sexually charged conversation" over social media for more than a week with an undercover FBI officer, according to charging documents. The officer was posing as a 13-year-old girl named “Moorena,” a jail report states.

Hale told "Moorena" on the social media messaging app Kik he wanted to meet up in person in order to have sex, the report alleges. He also sent "several photos of sexual positions” in messages over the app, according to the jail report.

Hale told the undercover officer he was in Orem and could meet at Orem Junior High School, according to the jail report. On March 14, Orem police detectives and FBI agents found Hale as he was leaving the parking lot of the school and took him into custody, the jail report states.

At the police station, Hale admitted to chatting with “Moorena” in order to meet and have sex, according to the report. He also told police he had brought condoms for the meeting, charging documents state.

Hale also wrote an apology letter to the family of “Moorena” after investigators asked him to write it, according to the jail report.

Hale’s cash bond was set at $10,000, according to charging documents. His initial hearing is scheduled for Thursday. It is not clear if Hale has an attorney.
