SPRING CITY, Sanpete County — A man was shot early Tuesday morning following a standoff with sheriff's deputies in Sanpete County.
Deputies were called to a home at 379 N. Main Street in Spring City, Sanpete County, Monday night on a report of an armed man who had “discharged a firearm on the direction of the reporting party,” according to a statement posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page.
Deputies made phone contact with the man, but he was uncooperative and refused to leave the home, the statement said. Eventually, he disconnected the phone call. SWAT was called in, and they continued to try and make contact with the man. The statement said those attempts were unsuccessful.
At some point, the man “exited the residence, firing at officers with a firearm,” the sheriff’s office statement said. Law enforcement returned fire, injuring the man.
The man was identified by the sheriff’s office as Paul Harward, 53. He was taken to Sanpete Valley Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, where he was stabilized, according to the statement, and was later transported to a hospital in the Salt Lake Valley.
The sheriff’s office statement said a motive for the incident was unknown and an investigation is ongoing.
