LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — Little Cottonwood Canyon reopened about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday after an avalanche forced the canyon's closure Monday.
The avalanche was reported on state Route 210 (Little Cottonwood Canyon Road) Monday afternoon, and officials said the road would remain closed until about 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Utah Department of Transportation officials reported, however, that the road was opened to allow motorists down the mountain shortly before 6 p.m. The road going up the mountain remained closed until Tuesday morning.
The road has now completely reopened, but vehicles should be equipped with four-wheel drive or chains before entering the canyon, officials said.
U.S. 191 near the Utah-Wyoming border and state Route 143 by Cedar Breaks National Monument in Iron County are still closed and will most likely remain so for the winter season, officials said.
State Route 9 through Zion National Park has also reopened after closing about 21 hours earlier Monday afternoon. Scenic Drive is still open but conditions are "not good," officials tweeted.
