MURRAY — A 58-year-old man who shot and killed an acquaintance during a heated argument has been sentenced to prison.

Carl David Johnson, 58, was found guilty of manslaughter Thursday and will spend between one and 15 years in the Utah State Prison, according to court records.

In June 2017, Johnson was drinking alcohol with some neighbors at Iris Apartments, 4865 S. State, which abut the Desert Star Playhouse in Murray. Johnson began arguing with 58-year-old Thomas Dunn who wrestled Johnson to the ground when the fight escalated.

After Dunn let him up, Johnson went into the apartment building, returned with a handgun, shot Dunn then kicked him in the face several times after he fell to the ground, witnesses told police.

Dunn later died from his injuries.

Court documents indicate Dunn and Johnson were acquaintances, and appeared to have some connection through the apartment complex where Johnson lived.

No one else was injured, and there were no productions scheduled at the Desert Star Playhouse that day.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article indicated that it was unclear how Dunn and Johnson knew each other. It has since been updated to say court documents indicate a relationship through the apartment complex where Johnson lived.
