SALT LAKE CITY — A Layton man who had a child at his side when he carjacked an elderly woman at gunpoint in a Nevada casino parking garage last year is headed to prison for 16 years.
Andrew Brigman, 29, and a child approached the woman as she exited her car at a casino in Sparks, Nevada, on July 6, 2017. He pointed a handgun at her and demanded she hand over her car, phone and credit cards, according to federal prosecutors.
The woman gave Brigman the key fob for her car, but he didn't know how to use it, so she showed him how to start the car. He and the child then left.
Sparks police sent out news releases with composite sketches and images of the car and issued an Amber alert for the child.
On July 14, the Sparks Police Department received a tip that identified Brigman as the possible suspect.
A few days later, police stopped the car for a traffic violation in Alamosa County, Colorado. Brigman, a woman and her four children were inside, including the child who accompanied him during the carjacking. Police found a .38 semiautomatic pistol in the glove box.
Brigman had earlier pleaded guilty to use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. He has prior felony convictions for attempted theft, aggravated assault, and theft and assault by a prisoner, all in Utah.
In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Miranda M. Du sentenced Brigman to five years of probation.
