SANDY — A 71-year-old man is in "extremely critical" condition after a motorcycle crash, according to Unified Police Lt. Manfred Lassig.

The crash took place about 4:30 p.m., at the intersection of Little Cottonwood Canyon Road and Wasatch Boulevard, Lassig said.

The biker was following a U-Haul van heading west on Little Cottonwood Canyon Road when the van slowed to make a left turn onto Wasatch Boulevard.

The motorcyclist was not paying attention, ran into the truck and flipped over the handlebars. After the motorcyclist flipped over the handlebars, his head hit the van, Lassig said.

Officers and citizens at the scene performed CPR on the man, and he was later taken to Intermountain Medical Center in extremely critical condition. He was wearing a small helmet known as a skull cap that did not have full facial protection, according to Lassig.

The man's wife was riding as a passenger on the back of the motorcycle and was taken to a hospital with a minor leg injury. The names of the man and his wife were not provided.

Both westbound lanes of Little Cottonwood Canyon Road were closed as of 7:30 p.m., according to the Utah Department of Transportation website. UDOT officials estimated the road would reopen about 9:30 p.m., according to the site.

Editor's note: Officials initially said the motorcycle crashed into a U-Haul truck. They later corrected this information to reflect it was a U-Haul van.
